Questions

How It Works

What sheen levels are available for polished concrete?

Sheen is measured by the finishing grit, typically ranging from a flat matte at 400 grit to a high-gloss mirror finish at 3000 grit. The target level is written into the estimate before work starts, so there is no ambiguity about the expected result.

Can existing concrete slabs be polished, or does the slab need to be new?

Existing slabs can be polished in most cases. The on-site assessment checks for cracks, surface coatings, and hardness. Old coatings are removed in the coarser grinding passes. Cracks and low spots are repaired before the first diamond pass begins.

What happens if polishing is delayed on a damaged or dusty slab?

An unprotected slab continues to dust and abrade underfoot. Surface damage deepens over time, which means the installer must start at a coarser grit to remove it, adding passes, time, and cost. Addressing the slab sooner keeps the scope and price smaller.

How long does the floor need to cure before it can be used?

A polished concrete floor is typically ready for foot traffic within 24 hours of the final pass. Heavy equipment or vehicle traffic requires a longer wait, which the installer will specify in the written estimate based on the densifier product used.

Does Phoenix’s heat affect the polishing process?

High slab temperatures affect how quickly the densifier reacts and penetrates. Local installers time the densifier application to the slab temperature to ensure full penetration before the product dries on the surface.

Is polished concrete slippery?

A high-gloss finish has a lower coefficient of friction than a matte finish. For commercial or wet areas, a slip-resistant sealer can be applied over the polished surface. The installer will note this option in the estimate if the use case warrants it.
